Please take precautions during freezing temps
January 03, 2025
Things to do:
- Disconnect and store hoses: Remove and store garden hoses to avoid water remaining in the hose and freezing.
- Drain outdoor faucets: Close the indoor valve supplying water to outdoor faucets and open the faucets to drain any remaining water.
- Insulate pipes: Use foam pipe insulation sleeves, UL-listed “heat tape” or “heat cable,” or similar products to insulate exposed pipes.
- Keep faucets dripping: Allow a thin stream of water to flow from faucets to prevent freezing.
- Open cabinet doors: In cold weather, open cabinet doors to allow warm air to reach pipes in the kitchen and bathroom.
- Maintain a steady temperature: Keep your thermostat set to at least 55°F (13°C) even when you’re away to prevent pipes from freezing.
- Seal air leaks: Seal cracks and openings around windows, doors, and at sill plates to reduce cold air penetration.
- Shut off and drain water systems: If you’re going to be away for an extended period, shut off the water supply and drain the water from pipes.
